Racism and segregation were evident in the North as well as in the South. This editorial from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle describes an incident in which an African-American woman refused to leave a "whites only" railroad car on 8th Avenue in New York. The conductor called the police to forcibly remove the woman from the car. The article discusses the reactions to this incident among abolitionists, and perspectives on segregation.
