Artist Statement
"A far cry from quilts once tied only to beds, my quilt art
expands tradition. I am an artist exploring the culture of quilting
for what it really is, Art. Art that is interwoven into my very
being and ultimately is transmitted into the fiber, which I use
as my medium."
"I use my hands and fiber to share with others the visualizations
that are a part of my everyday life. I utilize the basic structural
characteristics of a quilt, the applique technique of sewing, and
incorporate African print fabrics into each one-of-a-kind quilt
art piece. The fiber that I use allows me to add color, texture
and tone to the world. My quilt art tells stories or expresses ideas.
I am often inspired by music, childhood memories, dreams, my religious
values, life-changing events, everyday observations and political
and social events." "My goals as an artist are twofold: to elicit varied responses
from those who view my quilt art and to contribute to the growing
field of African-American Quilt Art."
