By using these techniques I can connect to the southern folk art practices of my grandmother, aunts and other female relatives. Just as folklore blends fact, fiction, mythology and symbolism, I attempt to do the same by using these elements and the media of photography and textiles to explore African American culture and its place in the African Diaspora.

My inspiration comes from the African textiles that often contain proverbs and codes, along with personal or group history woven into the fabric. By integrating various visual symbols and techniques from African art, and combining them with photography and American design elements, I seek to show the merging of different cultures and their subsequent impact on each other."
