The World of S*A*M*U*E*L K*A*P*L*A*N

by Samuel Kaplan

To be an artist is a gift from God. For 50 years I have been conveying my emotions by using paint on canvas. I enjoy finding something new in my surroundings every day. I never part from my sketchbook. I have dialogues with streets and buildings, windows and neon signs, stores and cafés, stairs leading to the roof, stairs leading to the basement, elevators, lovers in parks, cats in the backyard and dogs on a walk. I like Brooklyn and Manhattan, bridges and subway stations, working people and people on holiday. I am present among them and tell them about my emotions. This is my goal in life and in art.

Born in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, Samuel Kaplan received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Schevchenko Institute of Arts in Kieve, Ukraine. He moved to the United States in 1991 aand was accepted into the Los Angeles Art Association through which he had five solo exhibitions. Mr. Kaplan's paintings and graphics have been widely exhibited throughout the former Soviet Union and the United States, and they appear in museums in Russia and the Ukraine.
