Although the idea of riding through crowded New York City streets may seem intimidating, New York is actually a very bike friendly city. Bicycling Magazine recently rated New York as the 3rd best city (with a population over 1 million) for biking in the country. Biking is a fun, eco-friendly, efficient and healthy way to get around. The advocacy group offers tips and techniques for bicycle maintenance and safe riding.
MapMyRide
MapMyRide allows users to create their own biking maps, share them with the online community, and search for routes that others have created. Distance and elevation can automatically be determined. There are over 100 user generated maps for Brooklyn bike rides alone.
NYC Bike Maps
Borough by borough maps of bike paths, bike lanes, and greenways, facilitated by Google Maps technology.

Recycle-a-Bicycle
Recycle-a-Bicycle is "an innovative, fun youth training and environmental education initiative that has taken root in New York City public schools and respected after-school youth programs." In addition to selling used bikes, this organization trains youth on how to repair bicycles, in the process providing valuable mechanical skills and work experience.
Transportation Alternatives: cycling resources
Transportation Alternatives is a nonprofit whose mission is to "reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile, and to advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives."
