The historic election and inauguration of President Barack Obama makes this February an especially poignant Black History Month. Brooklyn Public Library is proud to celebrate it by presenting dozens of movies, performances, author readings and other events that honor the past and present achievements of African Americans. We encourage you to explore black history and the African American experience by viewing our subject guides and databases, reading our book recommendations, attending events, browsing our photo and art exhibition archives, and visiting BPL's African American Heritage Center and Caribbean Literary and Cultural Center.
Last year, thanks to help from Independence Community Foundation and your donations, Brooklyn Public Library reopened the historic Macon Library. It now features the African American Heritage Center (AAHC). The Center contains material on African American history and culture. It also has material on the Caribbean and Africa as well as the "Preserving Footsteps" collection. All public computers have genealogical databases including Ancestry.com.
The Caribbean Literary and Cultural Center, located at Flatbush Library, preserves and presents the histories and cultures of the peoples of the Caribbean through a circulating collection, programming and art exhibitions. Learn more here.
