Email stands for Electronic Mail and is a system for sending messages via the Internet. You can send messages to anyone in the world as long as you have their email address (this address is different from a Web address, or URL). You can write text messages and also attach photos and other kinds of documents. An email address always has the same format. It consists of a username, the @ symbol, and a domain name (often the name of the company providing the email account). For example, jdoe@yahoo.com Getting an Email Account There are many places to get a free email account. A few free services include but are not limited to the following: Hotmail, Yahoo, Lycos, and Juno. Usually all you need to set up an account is provide some basic personal information and create a username and a password. When creating a username and password you should use a combination of letters and numbers and avoid special characters such as spaces or punctuation marks. For example, a username could be jane86. Internet Service Providers and organizations also offer email accounts. If you have Internet access from home you probably also already have an email account.
