My Brooklyn: The Winners
4th Annual Photo and Essay Contest

June 28 - August 13, 2005
Central Library, Grand Lobby

Sponsored by Brooklyn Public Library & Con Edison

Brooklyn is both a geographical reality and an emotional landscape, enriched by the stories, memories and dreams of the 2.5 million people who live here, and the millions of others who've come before. It is a place that inspires profoundly personal feelings, and yet Brooklyn is also an experience we share.

My Brooklyn, a photo and essay contest sponsored by Brooklyn Public Library and Con Edison, captures all the beauty and complexity of the borough through the eyes and imaginations of its residents. Their words and images reveal what unites us-and what makes our community unique-its beauty and blight, its history and edge, its toughness and diversity... but most of all, its pride.

The exhibition is composed of essays and photographs from three different age categories including Juvenile (ages 12 and under), Young Adult (ages 13-19) and Adult. This year, a new category, "Best Photographs," was added to honor entries with exceptional photography. The photographs are of Brooklyn's past and present in both black and white and color. Winners were chosen based on originality and the ability to capture the spirit of Brooklyn.
