What is RIF?

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is a federally-funded national program in schools and libraries to encourage children and teens to read. Mrs. Robert S. McNamara and a group of citizens in Washington, D.C., organized the first RIF program in 1966. At Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), RIF consists of a weekly RIF Program in the Central Youth Wing and in its 58 branches. RIF also has special giveaways during the year.

Can I join RIF?

Anyone with a valid Brooklyn Public Library card, from babies through the 12th grade, is welcome to join RIF at a neighborhood branch or the Youth Wing at the Central Library. Babies and toddlers may join FirstRIF.

How can I join RIF?

Ask at your local branch for RIF hours. Children and teens may come in at any time during RIF hours to register for RIF and return and borrow books for RIF.

How do I register?

Come to the RIF desk and show your library card to the librarian or RIF worker on duty. Also present two books you would like to borrow. A RIF registration card is started for each new RIF member. You receive a free book as a gift just for joining RIF.

Can I participate in RIF without a library card?

You will need to bring your own library card to participate in RIF. If you lose your card, report the missing card and register for a new card. While the first library card is free, there is a fee for a replacement card.

How do I earn RIF gift books?

After registering for RIF, read and return two books each week, coming to the RIF desk to get credit for these books. After reading and returning six books, you can choose a free gift RIF book. Six books may not be borrowed in one week.

Parents/caregivers may not participate in coming to the RIF desk without the RIF member and may not select books for the RIF member.

Can I get RIF credit for books I read for school?

You can receive RIF credit for reading any library book completely. Assignment books that are read from cover to cover are eligible.

What happens if I miss RIF?

RIF membership does not expire. You can always resume your membership in RIF. If you need to miss RIF for a period of time and know in advance, tell the librarian or RIF worker.

Can I belong to RIF at more than one branch?

You should only belong to RIF in your local neighborhood branch or the Central Youth Wing. If you move, your record needs to be transferred to your new neighborhood library.

How else can I earn a free gift?

You are entitled to one free gift book on your birthday.

What are RIF Book Coupons?

You may receive a RIF Book Coupon during a school class visit to the library. Bring it to the library when you register for RIF, and get 2 free books. If you're already a member, bring it with you to RIF and you'll get a free book.

What are RIF Certificates?

When you have earned 14 or more RIF gift books , you get a RIF Certificate to thank you for your continuing membership in RIF.

What is FirstRIF?

FirstRIF is a program for babies, toddlers and their caregivers. FirstRIF takes place during a regularly scheduled baby, toddler or preschool program. In FirstRIF the parent, caregiver, or child must have a library card and an adult must agree to read two books per week to the child.

What is Hospital Storytelling RIF?

Reading Troubador volunteers visit hospitals, clinics and group homes to read to children. All children choose a RIF book and receive a RIF coupon.
