Flag Day
In 1949 President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Many Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White and Blue in front of homes and businesses. The day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United State. Many Americans sing, pledge, and pay respect to the flag, “Old Glory,” as a symbol of the country’s democracy and independence. Saluting the flag is a way of celebrating and honoring the United States of America.
The flag flies over the U.S. Supreme Court, where First Amendment right to free speech regarding the Pledge of Allegiance was upheld.
