Central Library Program Usher

Purpose of Assignment

To assist Brooklyn Public Library staff in The S. Stevan Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture at the Central Library by providing ushering assistance at programs and events.

Responsibilities

  • Upon arrival, put out all necessary signage for the event
  • Assist staff with all necessary set up
  • Collect tickets for ticketed programs
  • Distribute programs to audience
  • Assist in seating audience, especially reserved seats, as needed
  • Provide general information about available facilities and answer directional questions
  • Staff coat check when necessary
  • Instruct visitors regarding the BPL no food, no beverage policy in the auditorium

Requirements

  • Good communications skills
  • Minimum age 16 years old
  • Available to volunteer on the weekends
  • A friendly and approachable manner and an ability to get along with a diverse group of people
  • An ability to respond well to supervision
  • An ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Knowledge of languages other than English, helpful
  • Ushers are asked to make a minimum commitment to schedule at least 2-4 programs per month for at least 3 hours per program, for a period of at least 6 months
  • Able to schedule volunteer shifts in advance

Procedures

  • Be on time for your shift
  • Sign in and out on the Monthly Volunteer Time Sheet
  • If unable to be present at the scheduled shift, please call your volunteer supervisor, ASAP
  • Dress appropriately. Please wear business casual attire. Collared shirt or blouse preferred. No denim. Wear your volunteer badge during your shift.
