What is WiFi?

A way to get Internet access, WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity and is used to define any of the wireless technology in the IEEE 802.11 specification.

What is a WiFi Hotspot?

A WiFi hotspot is defined as any location in which 802.11 (wireless) technology both exists and is available for use to consumers to access the Internet. In some cases the wireless access is free, and in others, wireless carriers charge for WiFi usage.

How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?

Wireless access uses the WiFi standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b). Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the wireless network. If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, you must purchase a WiFi-compatible network card. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library's network.

How does it work?

Wireless access points located throughout the building communicate with your wireless device. You should be able to connect anywhere in the library. When your wireless network card senses a signal, a message appears on the screen indicating a wireless network is available. Open your web browser it will automatically connect to the Internet. When connecting to the Internet you are agreeing to abide by BPL's Internet Policy.

Where can I sit to pick up a stronger signal?

Within the Library, a wireless access point is located near the Circulation Desk. The signal will be strongest when the wireless device is used within the building.

Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required. Your only requirement is to have a laptop with built in wireless or compatible network card. Our network supports 802.11b/g & 802.11g only.

Is my information safe while using wireless?

Your information is not protected while using wireless, unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.) Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information.

Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?

Wireless users agree to abide by BPL's Internet Policy which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library's Internet service.

Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?

Yes. To search the Catalog, click on "Library Catalog" from the Brooklyn Public Library home page.

Can I print while using wireless?

Printing is not available. If you need to print, please save your work to disk or email files to yourself, then login to a library workstation and send print jobs to a printer.

Can the library help me configure my computer?

Sorry, everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.
