Materials Handling Center

This Valentine’s Day, we would like to send a love letter to Central Library’s Clerical Operations team – the heart and literal circulation system of this building. Our clerks staff the check-out and return desks in the Grand Lobby and the Popular Library on the mezzanine. They are likely the people that handed you your library card and welcomed you to BPL when you first became a member, who help you check out or renew your books, and who sometimes help you settle library fines and fees. Our clerks are always happy to give you directions or answer whatever questions you might have. The...

What's Happening at Central?

Posted in Central Library Renovation by Central Library Administration on Feb 14, 2019

If you’ve visited us over the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed there is a lot of noise coming from the back-end of the building, and that tarps and protection have gone up over some windows. What you can’t see, but can definitely hear, is work being done; it’s part of the first phase of Central Library’s renovation, which began in early January and is projected to be completed over the next two years. You may have also noticed that we’re going through some pains with our elevators and that even our quiet study spaces aren’t exactly quiet during construction. We appreciate your...

Thank you for your patience over the past month while we continued to worked on the Central Library plaza. Starting today, June 11, 2018, the center staircase will be closed for one day and will reopen on Tuesday June 12th. The construction fencing has been removed from the Eastern Parkway stairs and patrons are free to use those as well as both ADA ramps to enter the building. Portions of the Flatbush side stair will be inaccessible over the next few weeks as we shift our work to that side of the building, wrapping up all the work by June 30th. A little construction fencing...

Events on the Plaza - through the years

Posted in Central Library Renovation by Central Library Administration on May 10, 2018

The plaza at the Central Library in Grand Army Plaza has been an important community gathering and programming space for the library since opening in 1941. It has been used as a backdrop during major borough and library annoucements, to host our Summer Reading kick-off, a gathering point for Bike the Branches, and a playground for dogs for last year's Pups on the Plaza event. In the summer, you can enjoy swing dancing, live music and much more. We look forward to providing more entertaining and educational programming once our plaza renovation is complete at the end of June. In the...

Plaza renovation - April 2018

Posted in Central Library Renovation by Central Library Admin on Apr 10, 2018

Over the next few years, Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library will undergo a major renovation to make needed improvements and transform our public spaces to better serve the residents of Brooklyn. The first piece of that renovation begins this month with work on the Central Library Plaza. Beginning the week of April 16th construction fencing will be installed along the Eastern Parkway side of the plaza so that crews can replace cracked or broken flagstone and update the plaza’s electrical and broadband wiring. Outside the fencing there will be more localized work on replacing and...
