BPL Presents

Director Olivia Wilde and writer/producer Katie Silberman join At Liberty host Emerson Sykes to discuss storytelling, activism and their new women-led teen comedy Booksmart (which opens nationwide on May 24). Told from a wildly original, fresh and modern perspective, Booksmart is an unfiltered comedy about high school best friends and the bonds we create that last a lifetime. Capturing the spirit of our times, the film is a coming of age story for a new generation.

Olivia Wilde (Director) From directing to producing to starring on Broadway and in popular films and television shows, Wilde continues to elevate her versatile presence all while simultaneously giving back to the community. Recent film credits include the Oscar-winning drama Her, the Golden Globe-nominated Rush and the critically acclaimed indie comedy Drinking Buddies, which she also executive produced. TV credits include HBO’s rock’n’roll drama “Vinyl” and Fox’s hit medical drama “House." Wilde co-founded the philanthropic company Conscious Commerce and was recently honored by Save the Children — with which she works as an artist ambassador focusing on maternal, newborn and child survival —with their Advocate Award. She is also a board member of Artists for Peace and Justice and the ACLU of Southern California.

Katie Silberman (Writer/Producer) is a writer and producer originally from Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Dartmouth College (BA) and Columbia University’s Film Program (MFA), Silberman worked as showrunner Dana Fox’s assistant on the Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate.” Following her time on the show, Silberman was hired to provide rewrites on several feature films including Hot Pursuit, How to Be Single and Midnight Sun earning a co-producer credit on each. Her writing credits include Netflix’s Set It Up, New Line’s Isn’t It Romantic, and a musical adaptation of The Paper Bag Princess.

Emerson Sykes is the host of At Liberty and a staff attorney with the ACLU's Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project.
