Open House Resource Fair
Are you a teacher looking for primary resources for your classroom? Are you a student who wants to access an archive for your upcoming research project? Do you want to dive deeper into sources for a History Day project?
Join Brooklyn Connections and the Museum of the City of New York to meet archivists and librarians who will share information about their collections around New York City including: the BAM Hamm Archives, Weeksville Heritage Center, the Center for Jewish History, the Gilder Lehrman Institute, the Municipal Art Society of New York, the NYC Department of Records and Information Services, the National Archives at New York City, the New-York Historical Society, NYU Special Collections, The Morgan Library, Museum of the City of New York, Urban Archive, Brooklyn Historical Sciety, the Prospect Park Alliance Archive, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and the Queens Public Library archives.
Discover primary sources that can help your research, and learn where and how to access these from archives around New York City. Students and teachers welcome; student attendees will be eligible for a draw for a new tablet!
Program Highlights:
- Visit research institutions from across the city – all in one place
- Learn how to access primary and secondary sources for your research project
- Take part in a free workshop on building research skills and crafting a successful research project
- Connect with other teachers and students working on research and History Day projects
Program Schedule:
- Open house to explore archives from across New York City: 3:30 - 6:30pm
- Research Skills 101 workshop, for students and teachers (30 minutes): 4:15pm and 5:15pm
This event will also inspire you to flex your intellectual muscles by participating in New York City History Day, the regional program of the National History Day competition. Participating students create a project to showcase their research and original theses related to this year’s annual theme, “Breaking Barriers in History,” and present their findings to a panel of judges from a variety of professional fields. The Museum of the City of New York fosters understanding of the distinctive nature of urban life in the world’s most influential metropolis. It engages visitors by celebrating, documenting, and interpreting the city’s past, present, and future.
New York City History Day is an education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. By participating in History Day, students can research topics related to the annual theme and can express themselves creatively through various formats such as exhibit boards, documentaries, websites, papers, and performances.
