Brooklyn Public Library Announces First Annual “People’s Ball”

Celebrating Freedom of Expression at the Central Library on Grand Army Plaza on Saturday December 1

BROOKLYN (October 26, 2018)—Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) will present the first People’s Ball, on Saturday December 1 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the historic Central Library at Grand Army Plaza. Standing in stark contrast to the ultra-exclusive fashion galas that dominate the society pages each fall and spring, the People’s Ball at Brooklyn Public Library is a free event, offering New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to walk the red carpet and celebrate the daring and singular style of their neighbors from every corner of Brooklyn and New York City.

The Central Library at Grand Army Plaza will be outfitted for the event with a catwalk, open for 15 minutes every hour, for party-goers to show off their most daring ensembles. BPL’s professional photographer will capture images from the catwalk on @bpl_presents – and party-goers can dance to music from local musicians and DJs throughout the night.

“Dressing up is not a privilege. In fact, cutting-edge, fabulous style has nothing to do with exclusive high-priced galas and corporate fashion events. It belongs to the streets and to the people for whom dressing up is an act of creativity and freedom,” said László Jakab Orsós, BPL’s Vice President of Arts and Culture. “Brooklyn Public Library is devoted to breaking down barriers that keep New Yorkers from experiencing the cultural riches that our great city has to offer, and our hope is that the People’s Ball will be a reflection of how much imagination and ingenuity can be found around us and how much joy occurs by exercising our basic rights to be free.”

The People’s Ball extends BPL’s mission to provide access to educational, economic, and cultural enrichment opportunities of the highest quality to the 2.6 million people who call Brooklyn home.   The event is free, but RSVPs are encouraged at this link.
