Rights and Reproductions

Users may license digital reproductions of collection items for personal, scholarly, nonprofit, or commercial uses.  All requests are subject to copyright law.

You can request a reproduction by emailing us at digitalcollections@bklynlibrary.org.  The Center for Brooklyn History reserves the right to decline to reproduce material or to limit the amount of material that can be digitized.

To access Center for Brooklyn History digital collections visit the search our collections page. Users are free to download the available lower resolution images for personal use or in classroom educational use, simply click on the download tab. For higher resolution images please click the purchase button in the individual digital collection record or contact us. Please review the fee schedule before purchase.

Audiovisual Materials

Audiovisual archival materials are considered for digitization on a case-by-case basis. In the case that materials must be sent to a third-party vendor for digitization, patrons are responsible for all costs incurred. The Center for Brooklyn History reserves the right to select the digitization vendor.

Maps, Archival Materials, Art, and Artifacts

Photographs of artifacts and digital reproductions of photographs, maps, art, and paper documents are available on a case-by-case basis, provided the material may be safely scanned or photographed. All scans are provided as TIFF, JPG, or PDF files.

Oral Histories

Clips from oral histories are available on a case-by-case basis. All clips are provided as MP3 files. We do not provide copies of full interviews.

Permissions

Copyright status of each item is listed in the individual record. Not every item has been formally reviewed for copyright status. For unmarked items, we do not grant or deny permission for reuse. You may want to look into resources that can help you determine whether the items are in the public domain and free of copyright restrictions.

In requesting a copy of materials, the undersigned assumes all responsibility for any copyright infringement that may arise through the use of the requested copies and agrees to hold harmless the Brooklyn Public Library from any action involving infringement of the rights of an author or his or her heirs or descendants in common law or under statutory copyright. Brooklyn Public Library holds or manages copyright for some items. If you need information about reproducing these items, please contact the Brooklyn Public Library.

Citing Our Material

All reproductions of collection materials must include the credit line provided by CBH. Image orders will include a full citation upon delivery. Credit lines must appear in close proximity to the reproduction or in a special section devoted to credits. 

Takedown Notice

Because we are committed to making our collections available to the widest audience possible, the Center for Brooklyn History has made digital reproductions of items from our collections available online. For each item, CBH has endeavored to secure all necessary rights. If you are a rights holder and believe your materials have been added to our digital collections without your permission, or if you have any other concerns about the materials available online, please email cbhreference@bklynlibrary.org and include your contact information, the related URL, and the reason you wish to have the material removed.
