Summer Reading Family Feature: Katherine from Cortelyou Library

Kathy

It was a busy summer at Cortelyou Library with the library serving summer meals every day, volunteer book buddies and Summer Youth employees working hard, and of course, lots of programs for the whole family! One local family who made the library part of their summer fun was Katherine Guzman and her mother, Guadalupe Oliveri.

Katherine and her mom spent an enjoyable summer afternoon completing the 2018 Books & Beats Summer Reading Game Board challenge. Activities for children were divided into three age categories: 0-5, 6-12 and tween/teen. Since Katherine is a second grader, she completed the elementary school challenge. In doing so, she received stickers for each activity she finished. When she collected all four stickers, she filled out the entry form on the game board for a chance to win the Grand Prize – a selection of books chosen just for her. She also received a summer reading certificate and a Brooklyn Public Library drawstring backpack for finishing the challenge.

BPL’s dual booklist/reading challenge game packet included music-inspired book recommendations to match our summer reading theme and activities like invent and draw your own musical instrument. Katherine drew a picture of a Book Bongo for her musical invention. Great idea! She also wrote a song about the beauty of flowers and sang it for the librarians for another game activity.

Families like Katherine’s can continue the good reading habits they started this summer by registering for BPL’s online book recommendation service called Beanstack. Beanstack lets children keep track of the books they have read and post written, emoji and video book reviews. There is also a new app so you can easily keep track of all the books you and your child read together.

Available online 24 hours a day/seven days a week, Beanstack lets parents create online reading profiles for numerous readers and receive weekly emails with book recommendations. Reading profiles can be made for each child by selecting their age, reading level , language and interests – including sports, art, music and dance, careers, transportation, creatures, animals , historical figures, diverse books and much more! You can also search Beanstack’s index for over 275 state, international, magazine and web awards.

Why not create your own Fall reading challenge for your family using Beanstack and see how many books you can read by Halloween!
