Beginning in an "undertaking establishment," as an unstaffed deposit station in 1910 the branch continued to move, to a shoe store, a frame shack on Kings Highway and other homes until 1954, when it opened in its own building on its present site. Kings Highway is the first branch library built in Brooklyn by the City of New York. After a renovation completed in 2009, Kings Highway opened with expanded space, including a basement reading room. This room is a favorite quiet area for study and wi-fi usage. In 2013, a Passport Office opened in the library.
Passport Office Information
During the Kings Highway Library temporary closure, BPL's passport acceptance facility at Kings Highway will only be open Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm and Sundays from 10 am-1 pm.
Best Buy Teen Tech Center
A new interactive learning space for teens, NYC’s first Best Buy Teen Tech Center, will be coming soon to Kings Highway Library! It will be comprised of 1460 square feet on the second floor and will include workstations, collaboration areas, technical equipment and a music studio. Teens will be able to develop projects such as: creating art, producing music and animations; designing science simulations and mobile applications; writing and illustrating interactive poetry, stories and films; building kinetic sculptures and robotic constructions; and designing their own 3D worlds and games.
The new space will enhance and complement programs like the Brooklyn Robotics League, Teen Youth Councils, and the T4 program which has provided 1800 teens with training, volunteer and internship experiences in information technology. The Best Buy Foundation and ERI, the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste and the world's largest ITAD and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction company, will provide grant funding for the Teen Tech Center to bring new opportunities for creative youth experiences and expression, and technology product donations to power education and discovery. In addition, Best Buy’s partnership with The Clubhouse Network will give participants access to a global community of teens in over 100 clubhouses in 20 countries. Support for the Best Buy Teen Tech Center is also provided by New York State Senator Simcha Felder and the Estate of Earle Muroff (Richard Klass esq., executor).
