School of Magic: The Psychology of Magic
The first event in the School of Magic series will examine the psychology of magic: Why do our minds believe the impossible? What is the phenomenon of top-down processing? Why and how does the brain fill in the blanks in an incomplete picture? Two New York magicians Kent Axell and Eric Walton will discuss the subject together and give examples and live demonstrations from their own professional repertoires.
The event will close with a version of the Book Test, a mentalism demonstration in which each audience member is invited to write his or her favorite book title on a notecard, which is then placed into an envelope and into a clear glass bowl onstage. At various points throughout the event, the magicians will, without opening the envelopes, identify the favorite books of randomly selected audience members.
