Fritz Lang and writer Thea von Harbou created this visually-iconic sci-fi epic, hoping to make a film that equaled the quality of American-studio productions, and also found distribution in America. The story begins in the futuristic city of Metropolis as Freder, the son of the city’s ruler, discovers an underground-world of workers who run the machines that power the city above. He falls in love with an underground-missionary, Maria, who tries to unite both worlds, which is then complicated by the inventor, Rotwang, who creates a robot, in the guise of Maria, to keep the classes separate.

All movie start times are 12:00 Noon. Central Library does not open until 1 pm, but patrons attending film screenings may enter the Dweck Center beginning at 11:45 am through the side entrance on Eastern Parkway. Introductions begin promptly at 12:00 Noon.
Children under the age of six will not be admitted to these shows.
